Know what success looks like before you seek it

One mistake I see repeatedly in marketing analytics is trying to find success without first deciding on what success looks like. The simplest example I can offer comes from the time when I assisted a Web comic artist in determining the effectiveness of her advertising. She ran a very small operation, but it’s a lesson that scales to big business as well.
